How to Memorise More When Studying for VCE

Remembering more in VCE takes practice. A useful study routine combines understanding the material, recalling it without your notes and returning to it over time. These habits can make revision more purposeful, but they do not make learning effortless or guarantee a particular result.

Practise Retrieving What You Know

Close your notes and answer a question, explain a concept aloud or write what you remember. Then check your answer and correct any mistakes. Include questions that ask you to apply an idea, as well as recall facts.

Space Out Your Revision

Revisit a topic in several shorter sessions instead of relying on one long cram. For example, review a lesson later in the week and again the following week. Adjust the timing according to what you can recall and what still needs work.

Use Visuals to Explain Ideas

A diagram, timeline or concept map can help you organise a difficult topic. Try drawing it from memory, then check it against your notes. Choose the representation that suits the content rather than labelling yourself a visual or auditory learner.

Keep Study Sessions Manageable

Set a specific task for each session, such as answering five questions on a topic you find difficult. Take breaks and keep a list of errors to revisit. If you use mnemonics or a memory palace, check that you can also explain and apply the ideas, rather than only recite them.

Use Feedback to Plan Your Next Step

Mark your practice, identify why an answer was wrong and try a similar question later. A teacher or tutor can help you understand recurring errors and choose suitable practice.

The Australian Education Research Organisation explains the evidence behind these approaches in its spacing and retrieval practice guide.
